Unthinkable tragedy is unfolding on the Hawai’ian islands of Maui and Hawai’i (the Big Island) this week as multiple out-of-control wildfires sweep through historic villages and populated areas, destroying homes and important cultural buildings as well as taking over 30 lives and displacing many others. We mourn with the people of Maui and those who have been affected by the fires there and on the Big Island, and we think of those across the Hawai’ian islands who are also facing the threat of fire conditions.
Please join us in prayer for the people of Hawai’i: Lord, God, be with those who are coping with the devastation of the fires that have ravaged parts of Maui and the Big Island. We lift up to you those who have lost loved ones in the fires – those living and passed are beloved children of yours. We pray for those who are still in the process of evacuating and for those whose houses and businesses have been destroyed. We as for strength and courage for community leaders, government leaders, and church leaders who have the painstaking work of helping people put their lives back together. Lord, may those who are hurting feel your presence and comfort during this horrific time. Amen.
